AEMC to Close Early Friday in Preparation for Tropical Storm

Friday | September 22, 2023
All News

For the safety of our employees and members, Albemarle Electric Membership Corporation office will close at 3pm today due to the tropical storm conditions expected.

The National Hurricane Center has issued a tropical storm warning for eastern parts of North Carolina and Virginia to southern Maryland, including Chesapeake Bay, Albemarle Sound and Pamlico Sound. This means tropical storm force winds (39+ mph) will begin in North Carolina on Friday and then spread northward through Saturday.

These strong winds gusts are capable of downing trees and knocking out power in the areas under warnings from eastern North Carolina to Delaware. The downed-tree threat will be enhanced due to ground soaked by rain.

Should outages occur, Albemarle EMC will begin assessing damage and restoring service. Outages should be reported by calling our 24-hour, outage reporting number 1-800-274-2072, or 1-844-726-1812. Close to real-time outage information is available on our Outage Map, located at the top of our Internet home page (aemc.coop).

Never approach downed power lines. Instead, call 911. Also, portable generators should only be used in well-ventilated areas and connected directly to the appliance it is providing power. Generators providing power to a portion or all of a house should be connected through a double-throw, bypass switch, which prevents backfeeding power lines during outages.
